About This Expert:
My name is Edward Hallowell, but people call me Ned. I am a child and adult psychiatrist. I am also the father of three children who, along with my wife, Sue, are the stars in my sky, Lucy, age 12, Jack, age 9, and Tucker, age 6. Sue's age I will not reveal under penalty of severe something or other. I am interested in many topics. I have written books about ADD, worry, and connectedness. My basic beliefs are that we all need each other; that the main reason people suffer is that they feel disconnected from what really counts in life; that humor and warmth are especially useful; and that in my role as a mental health professional the most important things I have to offer are my experience, my knowledge and a genuine self with whom you can honestly relate.

I am an M.D. I graduated from Harvard College in 1972 where I majored in English, then I graduated from Tulane Medical School in 1978. I did my residency in psychiatry at the Mass Mental Health Center, and I did my fellowship in child psychiatry at Mass Mental also. I am currently on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School, and am director of The Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health in Sudbury, MA. I am the author of Driven to Distraction (with John Ratey) and Answers to Distraction (also with John Ratey). I am also the author of Worry; Connect: When You Worry About the Child You Love; and Human Moments.
